Well, I guess Chuck Renslow, International Mr. Leather (IML) founder, never read my blog about his pulpit preaching from last year that I had posted here or if he did, it apparently had no affect. This year Chuck issued a letter to the vendors banning all bareback related material from any promotions or vendors for IML 2010. Here is what he said:

Dear Vendors:

On behalf of International Mr. Leather, Inc., I would like to thank you for your past support and in particular for your participation as a vendor in
our annual Leather Market.  We are writing you today to inform you of
a policy change affecting next year (2010) and all future markets.

Though we are now three decades into the HIV/AIDS epidemic, no cure has beenfound.  The CDC and local health officials inform us that new infections are on the rise.  And, while we have had some success developing medications that might make infection more manageable, that accomplishment comes at a price. Not having experienced the deaths - the loss of loved ones -- which preceded these medications, we have an entire generation who may not fully appreciate or comprehend the severity of the situation.

Too many in our community believe HIV/AIDS is curable or manageable.  Too few understand that HIV/AIDS infections dominate life.  We believe that it is our duty to inform and educate.  Several years ago when “Meth” was the scourge of our community, IML drew a line in the sand and raised awareness and used all our influence to try and stop this addictive madness.  As is the case with HIV/AIDS, we believe it is our further obligation to do everything in our power to prevent future infections.

To that end, after considerable discussion, the Executive Committee of International Mr. Leather has decided that it will no longer allow participation in the IML Leather Market by any entity which promotes barebacking or distributes/sells any merchandise tending to promote or advocate barebacking.  This restriction will also apply to distribution of gifts, post cards or any other information via our facilities.

This policy takes effect immediately.

Sincerely,

Chuck Renslow, President
International Mr. Leather

Hmmm...I definitely disagree with many of his assertions. While I whole heartedly agree that it is Chuck's event and he can run it however he wants,  I feel the letter is uninformed and misleading.

Aren't we adults? Shouldn't we be allowed to make our own informed decisions? The gay community tends to say that women should have the right to choose what they do with their bodies, even when it involves taking the life of another living being, yet I get chastised for making my own choice about my body. Really? I can swim with sharks, jump out of airplanes, drive race cars, etc., all of which are high risk, yet I can't choose how to have sex? I think when we join in this type of thinking, it can be a slippery slope. We condone certain censorship, such as bareback, then there are others that want all sodomy to be outlawed, after all, it leads to this type of behavior, corrupts children, destroys families, etc. It caused the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, for Pete's sake! While we're at it, let's ban...

Breath control is a popular diversion that many BDSM folks participate in, and you can buy that equipment and videos at the IML Vendor Mart. But people die from it...and there aren't any cocktails to buy you some extra from from suffocation. Scat and piss videos and merchandise are sold by vendors at IML. Yet there are a number of nasty diseases and parasites that are just waiting to find a new host. Hepatitis, ecoli, etc. Wait! Rimming can transfer those too. We should also ban anything with rimming. Hmmm...HPV can be transmitted even with a condom, and then bi guys can give it to their wives/girlfriends. They could develop cervical cancer and die. Not to mention the risk of anal cancer in both men and women.

See the problem with allowing them to dictate a certain bias? It's a slippery slope. And once we take some of our own rights away, it makes it that much easier for those that hate us to take away more. There are bigger problems facing the GLBT community than this. Death rates from HIV are far lower than lung cancer, heart disease, and diabetes among gay men. The CDC reports new infection rates are the lowest they have seen in thirty years, yet bareback videos are a relatively new phenomena within the last decade. (I'm not just making it up, here is the link: http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/topics/surveillance/resources/factsheets/transmission.htm) Further, how do you explain the 1990s when the infection rates were so high and yet pretty much every video was safe sex? If the spread of HIV is caused by what our porn is, shouldn't rates have gone down during that time and then gone up again in this decade when companies like Dick Wadd, Treasure Island Media, Hot Desert Knights, SX Video, etc. started the mass production of bareback videos?

If you check the CDC morbidity and mortality statistics for 2006 which are the latest available, you find that in 2006, Heart Disease was the number one killer with 631,636 deaths. Cancer was second with 559,888. Then there were a host of other causes and finally HIV related deaths were 12,113. So AIDS/HIV is still statistically important, it is certainly not the leading cause of death.

Again going back to the CDC statistics for transmission, in 2007, less than 29% of new infections were in men that have sex with men. Now, here's a wildass extrapoliation. Please understand I'm just using these two sets of data because they are the latest statistics I can find on the new infection rates and the mortality rates, this is NOT TO BE INTERPRETED AS FACTUAL! But if you were to apply the new infection rate from the 2007 data to the 2006 mortality statistic, only 3,432 of the deaths would be attributed to men who have sex with men, which seems to be to be incredibly low. (Again, before anyone blasts me, yes, this is overlaying two non-related sets of data. Do not interpret this as fact.)

As far as I know, Chuck still owns the Mans Country bathhouse in Chicago. I've been there and while I've seen condoms there, I've never been with anyone that was using them. To show that Chuck is serious about reducing new infections, should he really be extending these policies to his other financial endeavors and perhaps post condom police in the baths to enforce condom use on property?

Don't get me wrong. I would love to see the spread of HIV stop. I preach sero-sorting. I think poz guys should only be barebacking with other poz guys. I think neg guys shouldn't really be barebacking at all if they are really wanting to stay neg or should only be barebacking in a neg/neg monogamous relationship. I think this sero-sorting practice is why the latest CDC statistics are as low as they are--more poz guys are freely able to meet other poz guys through pro bareback sites such as this where guys don't have to be ashamed to reveal their status. I'm amazed that after over 30 years, there is still such a stigma attached to being HIV Postive and guys are made to feel shame for having the infection. That whole "I'm clean UB2" thing that you find so frequently on some of sites like Manhunt, Men4SexNow, and Adam4Adam perpetuates this outcast mentality.

So, are bareback videos, websites, etc. really the problem here? It would seem as if this effort is misdirected. There are greater problems facing our community such as workplace discrimination, unequal treatment and representation in government benefits and tax rules, survivorship laws, and Don't Ask, Don't Tell, so mention just a few. If you really want to change something, there needs to be continued emphasis on HIV education and more promotion of sero-sorting as a future infection control method. Continuing to promote negative stereotypes of poz guys isn't helping make guys want to reveal their status. Poz guys need places to go to meet other poz guys for sex where they don't have to hide their status in shame. That freedom to be sexual is important and a basic human drive.

During Prohibition, they banned alcohol consumption, but it really just drove it underground. Banning pro-bareback vendors from the market isn't going to stop people from buying bareback videos or from barebacking in general. Guys are going to fuck and they are going to fuck bareback a lot of the time. In my opinion, let's stop trying to make barebackers feel bad and stop trying to make HIV Positive guys feel dirty and like it's something they have to hide. Let's promote the idea that guys should get tested regularly, know their status, and then make smarter choices about who they fuck and how they fuck them. If you are positive, accept it and move on. There are tons of places to meet other hot positive guys that you can just be yourself and not hide.

It's Chuck's contest and he has every right to make the rules. We have every right to support or not support his decisions and voice our opinions with our dollars.

Not that I have an opinion or anything...
